The Kurdistan Region anticipates a significant increase in honey production, driven by favorable weather conditions and revitalized mountain pastures. Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources expect total production to reach 600 tons. This substantial growth marks a strong recovery for local beekeepers across several agricultural areas this year. Apiculture leaders attribute the increase to improved rainfall and flourishing vegetation at higher elevations.
Regional statistics indicate that production reached nearly 500 tons during the previous harvest season. Consequently, the projected increase represents a 15–20 percent rise compared with last year. Major production areas include Erbil, Sulaimani, and several districts in Duhok province. Beekeepers in Choman, Sidakan, Penjwen, and Amedi report exceptionally strong improvements in hive health and activity. Furthermore, these regional pastures support diverse floral varieties that produce high-quality natural honey.
Ministry representatives actively support the beekeeping sector through disease-prevention and export-facilitation programs. Currently, more than 1,300 registered beekeepers manage nearly 500,000 beehives across the region. The government regularly provides treatments for Varroa mites to protect vulnerable bee colonies from disease. Moreover, officials aim to establish permanent trade channels to introduce local honey to international markets. Early shipments to Middle Eastern countries have successfully provided a foundation for expanding into global markets.
Scientific research highlights the potential health benefits and unique biological properties of regional honey varieties. Academic studies indicate that local honey contains antibacterial properties and high levels of antioxidants. In fact, laboratory analyses suggest that certain Kurdish honey samples are comparable to internationally renowned varieties such as New Zealand Manuka honey. These scientific findings support the reputation of local products while enhancing their appeal in highly competitive global markets. Therefore, international buyers are increasingly recognizing regional honey for its quality and purity.
The regional government continues to promote high-quality agricultural products to international markets. Government initiatives aim to diversify the local economy by supporting rural farming communities and beekeepers. As global demand increases, local producers are preparing to expand their operations and strengthen their international distribution networks. Continued government support and favorable environmental conditions point to a promising economic future for the region’s honey industry.
