Duhok Records More Than 2,320 Fire Incidents in First Eight Months of 2026

Duhok Civil Defense authorities released comprehensive emergency statistics covering the past eight months on Tuesday. Official figures revealed more than 2,320 separate fire incidents across the governorate since January.

Civil Defense Spokesperson Bizhar Sapar presented the emergency data covering the period from January 1 through August 31. Official reports confirmed that 15 civilians sustained injuries in the recorded fire incidents.

Six people drowned in local rivers, streams, and swimming pools during the same period. However, specialized rescue teams successfully saved five additional swimmers who faced immediate drowning risks in deep waters.

Emergency rescue units also rescued 35 people who became stranded in snow-covered mountainous areas during harsh weather conditions. These swift interventions helped prevent further casualties during extreme winter emergencies.

Duhok’s scenic landscape includes major waterways such as the Great Zab and Khabur rivers. Consequently, thousands of tourists visit water destinations across the governorate during the hot summer months for recreational activities.

High visitor numbers often increase drowning risks, particularly in areas where swimming is prohibited or considered dangerous. Furthermore, severe heatwaves and prolonged summer droughts significantly increase the risk of forest fires across the region each year.

Heavy winter snowfall also regularly leaves travelers and hikers stranded across high-elevation mountain passes. Therefore, Civil Defense authorities continue to urge residents and tourists to follow safety guidelines and avoid dangerous areas.

Moving forward, regional Civil Defense teams will maintain a high level of operational readiness to address seasonal emergencies. Ultimately, stronger public safety awareness can help reduce fire-related damage and prevent drowning incidents.
