Ten Drones Downed Over Erbil in Overnight Air Defense Operation

Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism forces and allied units successfully intercepted ten hostile drones over Erbil Governorate early Wednesday morning. Consequently, official air defense systems neutralized every incoming threat during a two-hour window between 1:13 and 3:31 a.m.

The Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Directorate confirmed that defensive systems destroyed all ten explosive drones before they could reach their targets. Furthermore, regional authorities reported no casualties or structural damage across the capital following the swift defensive operations.

This overnight aerial confrontation marks the latest escalation since the broader regional conflict began on February 28. Although the Kurdistan Region maintains strict neutrality, hostile forces have repeatedly targeted its infrastructure, government sites, and military bases.

Previously, two Iranian-made Hadid-110 drones struck the private office of Prime Minister Masrour Barzani in the Pirmam district. The August 17 attack drew widespread international condemnation from Gulf nations, Iraqi federal leaders, and American lawmakers.

In response to earlier aggressions, Prime Minister Barzani reaffirmed that regional institutions would continue to protect local citizens. Therefore, Wednesday’s successful interceptions demonstrate significant progress in strengthening air defense capabilities across the northern region.

Broader geopolitical developments continue to increase economic and military pressures surrounding the ongoing Middle Eastern conflict. For instance, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated Wednesday that financial sanctions had effectively severed Tehran’s access to dollars.

Moving forward, security coordination between local defense forces and international coalition partners will remain critical. Ultimately, expanding local counter-drone capabilities will help protect regional stability while preventing further disruption to essential infrastructure and civilian life.
