Akre Celebrates Peak Fig Season with Rich Harvest and Regional Pride

The fig harvest in Akre has reached its peak, bringing celebration and busy activity across the region. Every day, trucks loaded with fresh figs head toward Duhok and other cities. Known for their rich flavor and natural sweetness, Akre’s figs remain among the finest in the entire Kurdistan Region.

Farmers in the area proudly cultivate over 250,000 fig trees. Each year, these trees produce more than 8,000 tons of high-quality fruit. The unique soil, clean mountain air, and mild climate help give Akre figs their special taste and soft texture.

Local markets are now filled with the season’s best produce. Residents and visitors alike gather to enjoy fresh figs, dried varieties, and homemade fig-based sweets. The fruit holds cultural value as well—it often symbolizes prosperity, health, and hospitality.

Agricultural experts call figs a “miracle fruit.” They praise their benefits for digestion, heart health, and bone strength. Packed with fiber, calcium, and natural sugars, figs are also popular among health-conscious consumers.

As demand grows across the region, many traders see this season as one of the strongest in recent years. Farmers say the harvest has improved due to better water access and natural farming practices.

In Akre, families celebrate the harvest with local fairs, music, and shared meals featuring fresh figs. The event highlights both tradition and economic growth. With each successful season, Akre strengthens its place as a top source of this iconic Kurdish crop.
