Ambassador Irfan Siddiq Meets Nechirvan Barzani on Presidency Talks

Senior leaders in the Kurdistan Region met Monday with a British delegation led by UK ambassador Irfan Siddiq. The meetings focused on political developments, the presidency process, and government formation talks. Moreover, leaders stressed dialogue and coordination as key priorities.

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received Siddiq in Erbil. During the meeting, both sides reviewed internal developments in the Kurdistan Region. In addition, they discussed relations between the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan. Furthermore, talks addressed the broader political process and the stalled presidency election.

According to the presidency statement, both sides emphasized cooperation among political forces. Therefore, they called for coordination to overcome challenges. As a result, leaders urged progress through dialogue rather than confrontation.

The talks followed the postponement of a parliamentary session scheduled to elect the next president. However, disagreements between Kurdish parties continue to delay the vote. Meanwhile, each party continues to support its own candidate.

Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also met the British delegation. During the meeting, they highlighted peaceful solutions and political stability. Additionally, they stressed protecting Kurdish rights and regional balance.

Separately, President Masoud Barzani received Siddiq and his team. He underlined that the presidency represents a constitutional Kurdish entitlement. Therefore, he urged agreement on a clear and lasting mechanism to avoid repeated political deadlock. Moreover, he noted that the premiership issue requires resolution within Shiite political forces.

The delegation also met PUK leader Bafel Talabani and Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani. Qubad Talabani later said political obstacles continue to delay cabinet formation. Consequently, he warned that the caretaker government cannot address public needs effectively.

The United Kingdom maintains strong ties with the Kurdistan Region. Furthermore, Britain continues to support security efforts and political stability through advisory missions.
