Barzani Urges Immediate Ceasefire as Political Talks Intensify

President Masoud Barzani on Saturday called for an immediate halt to fighting across Syria, warning that continued violence threatens civilians and regional stability. He stressed that dialogue, not force, offers the only path toward lasting peace.

Barzani welcomed a recent decree addressing civil and political rights, describing it as a positive signal. However, he emphasized that practical steps on the ground must follow political declarations. He urged all sides to stop hostilities and prioritize negotiations.

The call came after a high-level summit in Erbil that brought together regional leaders and international representatives. During the meeting, participants discussed ways to de-escalate tensions and preserve fragile agreements. Barzani highlighted the importance of protecting Kurdish rights within any future political framework for Syria.

Meanwhile, clashes in several northern areas have displaced families and disrupted daily life. As a result, humanitarian needs have increased, placing additional pressure on aid organizations. Barzani called for protecting civilians and keeping humanitarian corridors open to allow assistance to reach affected communities.

At the same time, Syrian Democratic Forces Commander Mazloum Abdi traveled to Damascus for urgent talks with Syrian officials. The discussions focused on preventing further military escalation and preserving the 2025 integration agreement. Leaders view the agreement as a cornerstone for stability and cooperation.

Barzani also warned against military solutions, arguing that force deepens divisions and prolongs suffering. He encouraged regional and international actors to support mediation efforts and increase diplomatic engagement. According to him, coordinated pressure can help steer parties toward compromise.

Observers caution that renewed fighting could undermine recent political progress and derail negotiations. Therefore, they stress the need for swift and sustained diplomatic intervention. Kurdish leaders have increased coordination in response, aiming to strengthen their position during talks.

In conclusion, Barzani reiterated his demand for an immediate ceasefire across Syria. He emphasized that peace, inclusive dialogue, and constitutional guarantees for all communities remain essential for long-term stability.
