Erbil Closes Section of 120-Meter Street for One-Day Repairs as Airport Traffic is Diverted

Motorists in the Kurdistan Region must alter their travel plans today due to a major Erbil highway repair project. Local authorities closed a busy section of the 120-Meter Street early this morning to repair seasonal damage. Consequently, drivers face temporary detours until the maintenance crews finish their tasks later this evening.

The temporary closure impacts the fast highway section near the Ankawa overpass. Specifically, the maintenance zone stretches from the Gazna Street intersection directly to the Erbil International Airport front. Workers began blocking the lanes at 7:00 AM today. Furthermore, officials plan to reopen the entire route at 6:00 PM tonight.

To ease the traffic flow, the local traffic directorate established a clear alternative route for affected commuters. Drivers heading toward the airport must divert their course under the Ankawa overpass. Next, motorists should steer toward the city center onto the 100-Meter Street. Finally, they can utilize Rashkin Street to safely rejoin the 120-Meter highway.

Heavy winter rain and snow caused numerous potholes along this strategic ring road this year. Therefore, the city required rapid intervention to restore driving safety standards. Fortunately, the original construction firm volunteered to execute this essential Erbil highway repair job. Hemn Group is performing the extensive paving work completely free of charge.

This 38-kilometer ring road serves as a critical transportation artery for the capital city. The highway connects several major roads and significantly reduces daily traffic gridlock. Initially, the developer completed this massive 450-million-dollar infrastructure project back in 2017. Today, the company maintains its commitment to the city by fixing the tarmac. Local officials praise this voluntary corporate initiative during a tight municipal budget season. Motorists should expect normal travel conditions to resume tonight.
