Erbil Opens Theater Hall Named After Legendary Kurdish Artist Safwat Jarrah

The Erbil General Directorate of Culture and Arts inaugurated a specialized theater hall on Tuesday. Officials named the venue inside the Erbil Cinema and Theater Directorate after legendary artist Safwat Jarrah.

Erbil Cinema and Theater Director Shakhawan Mustafa announced the ceremonial opening during a public press briefing. Cultural authorities established the venue to honor Jarrah’s lifelong contributions to the development of Kurdish theater.

Mustafa highlighted that Jarrah viewed theatrical performance as a vital mirror reflecting social struggles and human emotions. Therefore, dedicating the cultural space pays tribute to an iconic figure who helped reshape regional performing arts.

Born in Koya in 1935, Jarrah began his artistic career in Erbil during the early 1950s. He famously portrayed Desdemona in Othello due to the limited participation of female actors in theater at the time.

Jarrah graduated from the theater department of the Baghdad Institute of Fine Arts in the late 1950s. Moreover, he directed major theater departments in Baghdad and Erbil between 1970 and 1999.

Throughout his career, Jarrah directed landmark stage productions, including Surme Khan and The Funeral of Sirajaddin. His creative work introduced new artistic approaches and helped elevate regional theater across multiple generations.

Although Jarrah passed away in July 2010, his extensive cultural legacy continues through regional institutions. Official representatives emphasized that honoring influential artists can inspire younger generations of local performers.

Moving forward, the newly opened facility will host theatrical performances, cultural workshops, and community arts programs. Ultimately, the initiative reinforces Erbil’s broader efforts to expand cultural infrastructure and preserve Kurdish artistic heritage.
