Erbil – Security forces in Erbil detained two men on Monday for firing guns during an election campaign event, violating the Kurdistan Region’s strict regulations on public safety and weapons use.
According to a police statement, the suspects opened fire into the air during a political rally in one of Erbil’s districts, prompting immediate intervention from local authorities. The two individuals were taken into custody, and their weapons were confiscated on the spot.
Officials emphasized that discharging firearms in public areas, especially during election events, poses serious risks to civilians and undermines the spirit of peaceful campaigning. Police reiterated that the law strictly prohibits celebratory gunfire, warning that any similar incidents will result in arrest and legal consequences.
The Erbil Asayish (Security Directorate) urged all political parties, supporters, and citizens to adhere to safety regulations and ensure that campaign activities remain civil and orderly.
Authorities noted that maintaining stability and preventing violence are key priorities as the Kurdistan Region prepares for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
