France strengthened its partnership with the Kurdistan Region during a high-level visit to Erbil on Thursday. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot praised Kurdish Peshmerga forces for their role against ISIS. He also highlighted long-standing military cooperation between France and Kurdish forces.
During a joint press conference, Barrot spoke alongside President Nechirvan Barzani. He said France values the sacrifices made by Kurdish fighters. Moreover, he confirmed that Paris named a public pathway to honor the Peshmerga.
He recalled France’s early engagement with the Kurdistan Region. In 2014, former president François Hollande visited Erbil during critical regional fighting. Therefore, Barrot said France remembers every fighter who died resisting terrorism.
France Kurdistan Region relations remain strong during regional tension. Barrot stressed close coordination amid developments in Syria. Additionally, he thanked Kurdish authorities for constructive political engagement.
Barrot emphasized shared responsibility for stability. He said France works to implement agreements supporting a united and peaceful Syria. Furthermore, he insisted Kurds must shape Syria’s future through political participation.
France Kurdistan Region relations extend beyond security cooperation. Barrot highlighted economic, cultural, and environmental collaboration. He said these partnerships deliver direct benefits to Kurdish citizens.
Meanwhile, Barrot acknowledged security risks facing the Kurdistan Region. However, he reaffirmed France’s long-term commitment to cooperation. He also thanked Kurdish leaders for continued trust.
Regarding relations with Baghdad, Barrot urged dialogue and negotiation. He encouraged leaders to resolve disputes through political engagement. He also announced plans to meet Masoud Barzani to discuss regional challenges.
Finally, Barrot recalled a historic moment of Kurdish-French relations. In 1968, Mullah Mustafa Barzani congratulated Charles de Gaulle on France’s national celebration. Barrot said that message symbolized enduring mutual respect.
France Kurdistan Region relations, therefore, continue to rest on shared sacrifice, trust, and long-term cooperation.
