Gali Ali Bag Draws Tourists with Breathtaking Views

Gali Ali Bag, Iraq’s tallest and most famous waterfall, continues to attract thousands of visitors each year. Located in the northern Kurdistan region, this natural wonder flows through rocky cliffs and lush valleys. Its powerful stream and scenic surroundings make it one of Iraq’s top tourist destinations.

The waterfall sits near the town of Rawanduz, about 150 kilometers from Erbil. Many tourists travel along winding mountain roads to reach it. Along the way, they enjoy dramatic views of steep canyons, green forests, and flowing rivers.

During spring and summer, Gali Ali Bag becomes even more popular. The melting snow from the mountains increases the water flow, creating a dramatic and refreshing sight. Local families and international travelers often picnic near the waterfall. Many also swim in the cool pools or take boat rides near the splash zones.

Vendors sell local food, snacks, and souvenirs around the area. Tour guides offer hikes to nearby peaks and historical sites. Because of its growing popularity, new hotels and restaurants have opened nearby to support tourism.

Gali Ali Bag also holds historical importance. Its name comes from Ali Beg, a Kurdish prince. In 1909, a photograph of the waterfall appeared on the old Iraqi five-dinar bill. That image made it a symbol of Iraq’s natural beauty.

Tourism officials in the region continue to promote Gali Ali Bag as a safe and family-friendly destination. They believe that natural landmarks like this help improve Iraq’s global image. In addition, tourism provides jobs and supports local businesses in the area.

As more people seek peaceful outdoor experiences, Gali Ali Bag stands out as a perfect destination. Its roaring waters and breathtaking views make it a place visitors never forget.
