Iraq rocket attack targets Kirkuk, raises ISIS fears

The Iraq rocket attack that shook Kirkuk has alarmed both residents and officials. Late Monday night, rockets hit two major areas. One target was Kirkuk International Airport. The other was the Urouba neighborhood. The incident left one airport staff member injured and created panic across the city.

The Iraq rocket attack happened around 11:30 p.m. Local security teams quickly responded. Emergency services rushed to the scene while police blocked several roads. Officials began an urgent investigation to find out who was behind the assault.

Security officers stated that all four rockets were Katyusha-type. These short-range weapons often appear in regional conflicts. Three rockets landed close to the airport. One rocket struck the Urouba area, which is home to many civilians.

The General Directorate of Kirkuk Police released a preliminary update. A senior officer shared early findings with local reporters. He said the rockets likely came from outside the city. This theory matches previous attack patterns linked to known militant groups.

Investigators believe the rockets were fired from the Rashad district. This area sits outside Kirkuk and remains a dangerous zone. For years, ISIS fighters have used Rashad to launch attacks. That history raised fears after this recent strike.

Although police did not confirm the attackers’ identities, many officers suspect ISIS involvement. The Iraq rocket attack mirrors earlier ISIS tactics. They often target security zones and create fear in residential districts.

Local officials have increased patrols near Kirkuk. Security checkpoints now operate across the city. Police and military units are also sweeping the Rashad area. They want to locate the launch site and track any suspects nearby.

The Iraq rocket attack shows that the region still faces serious threats. Despite past military operations, ISIS maintains small cells in remote places. These cells wait for chances to strike soft targets.

Residents in Kirkuk remain on alert. Many worry about future attacks or possible clashes. City officials asked people to stay calm but remain cautious. They also promised to boost public safety.

As investigations continue, leaders say they won’t stop until they find those responsible. They plan to increase surveillance and strengthen defenses across vulnerable areas.
