Italian Ambassador Highlights Growing Ties and Investment Opportunities in Kurdistan Region

Italy strongly seeks to strengthen its economic partnership with the Kurdistan Region. Furthermore, Rome aims to encourage more Italian businesses to invest in the region.

Italian Ambassador Niccolò Fontana praised the territory’s impressive stability and growth, describing the current relationship as highly constructive. According to the diplomat, both societies share ancient cultural roots and strong family values. He added that local hospitality deeply impressed him during his first visits to the area.

Currently, nearly 40 Italian companies are managing projects across multiple sectors in the Kurdistan Region, including healthcare, infrastructure, and green energy. Fontana expressed optimism about future commercial expansion. He specifically praised the regional government’s new Runaki electricity project, describing the initiative as a major step forward in improving public services.

Security cooperation also remains a key pillar of the partnership. Italian forces have trained thousands of Peshmerga soldiers over the years. This security assistance has helped strengthen the region’s defenses during major conflicts. Fontana praised local leaders for maintaining stability despite ongoing tensions across the Middle East.

Cultural preservation also continues to unite Italy and the Kurdistan Region. Eleven Italian archaeological teams are currently working at heritage sites across the region. Additionally, experts are preparing to open a new joint historical park near Duhok.

The ambassador encouraged constructive dialogue between regional leaders and the federal government, noting that mutual cooperation will contribute to long-term prosperity. Fontana also expressed his personal appreciation for local cuisine and historic marketplaces.
