The Kurdistan Democratic Party says it continues efforts to overcome political divisions and form a new Kurdistan Regional Government.
KDP spokesperson Mahmoud Mohammed said the party intensified political efforts after the latest elections. He said the main goals include reopening parliament and forming the next regional cabinet.
Mohammed made the comments during a press conference on Saturday. He stressed that political disagreements should not prevent regional institutions from resuming their responsibilities.
He also said political parties must respect the confidence voters placed in them. Therefore, parliamentary activity and government formation should remain immediate political priorities.
Meanwhile, Mohammed called for political meetings to produce practical results. He said parties should avoid meetings that create discussion without leading to concrete political decisions.
According to Mohammed, any gathering should deliver a clear message to the people. Furthermore, political leaders should follow meetings with specific steps toward resolving outstanding disagreements.
Mohammed described KDP President Masoud Barzani’s initiative as an effort to reduce political tensions. Following that initiative, the KDP contacted political parties that agreed to participate in discussions.
The spokesperson said the party remains committed to removing obstacles preventing meaningful political dialogue. However, he added that arrangements for a results-oriented meeting still require further work.
Mohammed also addressed recent comments concerning Kirkuk and urged politicians to exercise caution. He said Kirkuk’s people should ultimately determine the city’s political future.
He described Kirkuk as a city with a Kurdish identity and diverse ethnic communities. Consequently, he warned that political statements could increase tensions or undermine stability.
The KDP previously criticized remarks by Kirkuk Governor Mohammed Samaan. The party said those comments did not reflect Kirkuk’s current circumstances or political positions.
Mohammed urged politicians to use language that protects stability and avoids escalating tensions. He also stressed that Kirkuk requires particularly careful political management.
He noted that Kirkuk has influenced Iraq’s broader political and security stability. At the same time, the disputed province has repeatedly become a source of political disputes.
Therefore, Mohammed urged officials to study proposals concerning Kirkuk before making public statements. He said politicians should consider both potential benefits and possible negative consequences.
Overall, the KDP continues prioritizing political dialogue, parliamentary activation, and cabinet formation. Meanwhile, its comments highlight the importance of cautious political management across the Kurdistan Region.
