KRG Launches Three New Power Substations in Erbil Under 100 Billion Dinar Plan

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is building three new electricity substations in Erbil under a project worth nearly 100 billion dinars. The plan aims to improve electricity supply and expand 24-hour service across the governorate.

The KRG project includes 132 kV substations in Timar, Shamamak, and Hasarok. Officials say the Hasarok station is a priority because the area has faced long-term power shortages.

On Sunday, the Electricity Minister and the Erbil Governor reviewed the project stages. They discussed progress and upcoming construction steps. Governor Omed Khoshnaw said the ministry will soon sign a contract with the contractor. Work will start immediately after signing.

The government plans to complete the substations within months. It targets full 24-hour electricity coverage in Erbil by mid-year. The Hasarok substation will improve power stability in one of the fastest-growing districts. It will also reduce pressure on overloaded feeders in nearby areas.

Officials say the project will not only support homes but also help businesses and factories. It will increase electricity capacity and reduce outages. The substations are part of the wider Runaki program. This program focuses on modernizing the power network and reducing shortages across the Kurdistan Region.

The Shamamak station will support nearby agricultural areas. The Timar station will improve supply in urban districts with rising demand. The government says these projects represent a major step in energy reform. They also aim to support economic growth and improve daily life.

With these three substations, authorities expect a more stable and reliable electricity system in Erbil.
