Kurdistan Continues Efforts to Uncover Mass Graves and Identify Victims of Past Atrocities

Authorities in Kurdistan announced new progress in uncovering mass graves linked to decades of violence. According to Dhiaa Karim, Director General of the Mass Graves Affairs and Protection Department, teams have successfully exhumed remains from 81 out of 98 confirmed sites across the region.

Karim explained that 17 additional locations are now scheduled for excavation. He emphasized that each operation follows a detailed and transparent process to ensure accuracy in identifying victims. Forensic experts, supported by international partners, continue to collect DNA samples and document findings for historical and judicial purposes.

He noted that many of the victims were civilians targeted during violent campaigns, and the goal is to restore their dignity through proper identification and respectful reburial. Families of the missing have been closely involved, with officials updating them throughout the process.

Karim also said the department faces logistical challenges, including difficult terrain and limited access to some sites. However, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing all excavations and providing closure to thousands of families still searching for their loved ones.

These ongoing efforts, he added, reflect Kurdistan’s broader pursuit of justice, truth, and reconciliation after decades of tragedy.
