Kurdistan Expands Employment Opportunities Through New Business Forum

The Kurdistan Foundation and the German development agency GIZ launched the first Inclusive Employment and Business Forum in Erbil to strengthen the regional job market. The event connected job seekers with employers while supporting business growth across the Kurdistan Region.

The two-day forum brought together government officials, business leaders, civil society organizations, international partners, and diplomats. Together, they discussed practical ways to build a more inclusive labor market. They also explored opportunities for women, people with disabilities, refugees, and internally displaced people.

The forum welcomed more than 110 skilled job seekers and representatives from small and medium-sized businesses. More than 50 companies participated and offered over 230 job vacancies. As a result, participants met employers directly and explored new career opportunities.

Organizers awarded three companies financial prizes totaling 22 million Iraqi dinars. The awards recognized innovative business ideas and encouraged private sector growth.

Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Zakia Said Salih said the forum reflected strong cooperation between public institutions and development partners. She added that the ministry continues to expand employment opportunities through vocational training and business support.

Salih said the government has provided around 140,000 vocational training opportunities. These programs help participants develop practical skills that match labor market needs. Women, people with disabilities, and displaced communities remain among the main beneficiaries.

Many job seekers welcomed the chance to meet employers face to face. They exchanged contact information, learned about vacancies, and expanded their professional networks.

Yara Barzinji, Executive Director of the Kurdistan Foundation, described the forum as an important bridge between employers and job seekers. She said months of cooperation with GIZ helped make the event possible. She also stressed the importance of stronger private sector partnerships.

Additionally, the Kurdistan Regional Government plans to expand support for small and medium-sized enterprises through the Bloom Project. The next phase will offer loans of up to 150 million Iraqi dinars for approved businesses. Officials expect the initiative to encourage investment, create jobs, and strengthen the regional economy.
