Kurdistan – Minister Saman Barzanji and WHO Team Launch Unified ‘One Health’ Strategy

Kurdistan Region Health Minister Saman Barzanji met a senior WHO team in Erbil and launched a unified “One Health” strategy that connects human, animal, and environmental health systems. The minister welcomed the delegation and explained the growing need for stronger cooperation across all sectors. Moreover, he stressed that modern health challenges require fast coordination and scientific planning.

The new strategy links several institutions and encourages closer monitoring of public health threats. The minister highlighted concerns about antibiotic misuse, climate pressures, and new disease patterns. He noted that these challenges grow quickly and demand collective action. The WHO representatives agreed and underlined the importance of a single framework that guides every sector.

Both sides reviewed the effects of climate change on health. They discussed rising temperatures, shifting disease vectors, and pollution risks. Additionally, they focused on the importance of early detection systems and stronger laboratory networks. The minister emphasized that coordinated action protects communities and strengthens long-term resilience.

They also addressed antimicrobial resistance. The minister warned that improper drug use creates serious dangers for future generations. Therefore, he called for stricter regulations, better awareness campaigns, and improved veterinary controls. The WHO team supported these steps and offered technical guidance.

Furthermore, the meeting explored capacity-building programs. They examined ways to train doctors, veterinarians, and environmental experts under one unified approach. They also assessed opportunities for joint research, regional data sharing, and new awareness projects. The minister encouraged constant dialogue and continuous field cooperation.

The launch of the strategy marks an important step toward integrated health protection across Kurdistan. Minister Barzanji and the WHO delegation agreed to strengthen coordination and expand partnerships that protect the Region’s people, animals, and environment.
