Kurdistan – PM Masrour Barzani and Ambassador Gregory Galligan Advance Canada–Kurdistan Cooperation

PM Masrour Barzani met Canadian Ambassador Gregory Galligan in Erbil and launched a new discussion on investment, trade, and reforms across the Kurdistan Region. The prime minister welcomed the ambassador warmly and highlighted the strong relationship between the two sides. Moreover, he encouraged Canada to expand its economic footprint in the Region and explore new long-term partnerships.

Ambassador Galligan expressed clear interest in wider cooperation. He outlined Canada’s focus on sustainable development, private-sector growth, and responsible investment. Additionally, he noted that Canadian companies examine opportunities in agriculture, mining, education, and digital services. PM Barzani described these sectors as strategic priorities and urged faster engagement from Canadian firms.

Both sides then reviewed the KRG’s reform agenda. PM Barzani explained new steps that improve transparency, modernize institutions, and strengthen services. He stressed that these reforms create a safer and more competitive environment for foreign investors. The ambassador welcomed these efforts and emphasized the importance of predictable regulations and stable markets.

Furthermore, the meeting addressed recent security and geopolitical developments. PM Barzani condemned the terrorist attack on the Khor Mor gas field and described the assault as a direct strike on the Region’s economic stability. Ambassador Galligan expressed strong solidarity with the Kurdistan Region and voiced concern over threats targeting essential energy infrastructure. Both sides agreed to continue coordination on regional security and strategic planning.

The discussion also covered cultural cooperation and academic exchange programs. They examined ways to support young professionals, expand training opportunities, and encourage innovation. PM Barzani stressed that strong international partnerships accelerate progress and open new doors for the next generation.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to deeper cooperation. Both leaders expressed confidence in the future of Canada–Kurdistan relations and agreed to maintain steady dialogue on investment, security, and reform.
