Kurdistan Region Lodges Official Protest to Iran Amid Rising Diplomatic Tensions

The Kurdistan Region Government has formally expressed concern to Iran over recent statements made by its officials. The move reflects rising diplomatic tensions.

On Tuesday, April 7, 2026, the Department of Foreign Relations of the Kurdistan Region announced that it had delivered an official letter of protest to the Iranian Consulate General in Erbil. The letter outlined strong concerns about recent remarks.

This step followed statements by Iran’s Consul General in Sulaymaniyah. Those remarks included threats and criticism directed at the people and political institutions of the Kurdistan Region. As a result, the KRG responded quickly.

In its letter, the Kurdistan Region stressed its deep concern about the tone and content of the statements. It emphasized that such language does not support healthy diplomatic engagement. Instead, it risks undermining trust.

The KRG highlighted the importance of mutual respect between neighbors. It noted that constructive dialogue should guide relations. Therefore, officials called for avoiding escalation.

At the same time, the statement underlined the value of stable regional ties. The Kurdistan Regional maintains that diplomacy must be based on cooperation. This includes respect for constitutional and political frameworks.

In addition, the KRG warned that continued hostile rhetoric could harm bilateral relations. It urged Iranian representatives to reconsider their approach. Calm communication, it said, is essential.

The protest signals a firm but measured response. While tensions have risen, the Kurdistan Region continues to support diplomatic solutions. Officials hope this step will help prevent further misunderstandings and preserve regional stability.
