Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani Calls for Unified Nonpartisan Modernization of Peshmerga Forces

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani commanded the graduating class to build a unified and professional military institution. He delivered this powerful mandate during the fifth graduation cohort ceremony at the Qalacholan Military College. Consequently, the ceremony highlighted a strategic shift toward a modernized, strictly nonpartisan security architecture for the region.

President Barzani emphasized that the Peshmerga forces represent a central pillar of Kurdish national identity. Therefore, he urged the 210 newly commissioned officers to completely avoid internal political rivalries. Historically, political factions controlled separate units, but the current security paradigm demands full institutional unity. For this reason, the regional leadership seeks to permanently eliminate partisan influence from the defense forces.

These security forces earned widespread international recognition for their decisive battles against the Islamic State group. However, regional experts note that future stability requires an evolutionary shift away from legacy operational structures. In addition, the president outlined key technological goals for addressing increasingly complex asymmetric threats across the region. Modern commanders must master advanced military systems while committing to rigorous, continuous training. Accordingly, the government believes that conventional infantry tactics alone are no longer sufficient to protect vital border areas and infrastructure.

Beyond tactical enhancements, President Barzani also linked military service to broader civil and democratic responsibilities. Specifically, he instructed the new officers to defend human dignity regardless of religious or ethnic background. This commitment helps maintain the region as a rare sanctuary for coexistence amid widespread regional tensions.

International allies continue to provide vital support to ensure that the Peshmerga forces achieve these modernization goals. Consequently, President Barzani expressed his appreciation to the United States-led International Coalition during his address. Their ongoing partnership is an indispensable asset in the effort to eradicate regional terrorism and stabilize the region.

Local observers expect that this structural transition will strengthen institutional governance across the autonomous territory. Therefore, the regional administration continues to prioritize coordination in the defense sector with international military advisers. Ultimately, the graduating class faces a challenging mandate as they step onto the parade grounds: they must safeguard a revered historical legacy while pioneering structural reforms within the Peshmerga forces.
