Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani Condemns Drone Strike Targeting PM Masrour Barzani’s Office

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani has condemned a drone attack targeting senior regional officials, calling it dangerous. He also urged Baghdad to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities for protecting national security.

The attack targeted the private office of Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani. Additionally, the drones reportedly targeted the residence of the Protection Agency chief.

The incident occurred early Monday in Pirmam, Erbil Province, amid heightened regional tensions. According to the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Directorate, two explosive-laden Hadid-110 drones targeted the locations.

Authorities reported no casualties following the attack. However, the incident raised concerns about protecting senior officials and sensitive government facilities.

President Nechirvan Barzani strongly condemned the strikes, describing them as unacceptable and dangerous. Furthermore, he urged the federal government to prevent similar attacks from happening again.

Barzani emphasized that protecting Iraq’s sovereignty and security remains a shared responsibility. Therefore, he called on all sides to reduce tensions and prevent further escalation.

The attack carries additional political significance because the reported targets directly involved senior regional leadership. Rather than striking conventional military positions, the drones targeted politically sensitive locations.

Meanwhile, the use of explosive drones highlights the growing security challenges facing the Kurdistan Region. Unmanned systems can threaten strategic facilities while reducing risks for those operating them.

Consequently, regional authorities may review surveillance systems and counter-drone capabilities around Erbil. They could also strengthen coordination with Baghdad and international security partners.

Erbil remains a major political, economic, diplomatic, and security center within the Kurdistan Region. Therefore, repeated drone incidents could affect perceptions of stability among businesses and investors.

The latest attack also follows other reported drone incidents around Erbil during heightened regional tensions. Earlier incidents have increased concerns about protecting the Region’s airspace and strategic facilities.

However, officials have not reported casualties or major disruptions to government operations. Nevertheless, targeting senior officials creates significant political and security concerns.

Security agencies are expected to examine the drones, flight paths, launch points, and recovered materials. Additionally, investigators could analyze surveillance data to determine how the drones reached their targets.

For now, responsibility remains unconfirmed pending further investigation and official evidence. Going forward, authorities may strengthen airspace monitoring and protection around senior officials.

President Nechirvan Barzani’s response combines condemnation with a call for restraint and cooperation. Ultimately, he stressed that preventing escalation remains essential for protecting regional stability.
