The Kurdistan Region has reached a new milestone in clean water storage capacity. With major investments in water infrastructure, the Region is now better prepared to face drought and support long-term growth. The increase in clean water storage capacity has become a game changer for cities, towns, and agricultural lands.
To achieve water stability, the government launched dozens of projects. These include dams, ponds, and water systems in various districts. The aim is clear: to ensure reliable access to clean water, boost farming, support herders, and protect communities from dry seasons.
So far, the ninth cabinet has completed 23 water ponds. Another 58 are either under construction or about to begin. In addition, nine large dams have already been built, with a total cost of 265 billion dinars. Several more dam projects are underway. Nearly one trillion dinars has been allocated to nine key water and irrigation projects in cities and small towns.
These projects directly benefit about 10,000 families living in low-water areas. The focus remains on both urban expansion and rural protection. The rising clean water storage capacity is vital to all these plans.
Dr. Karwan Sabah Hawrami, General Director of Water Resources in the Kurdistan Region, said that the cabinet has been restructuring the water system. “We’ve focused heavily on water management and integration,” he stated. “Right now, our storage capacity has reached 10.1 billion cubic meters. With the completion of the final dam, it will reach 10.2 billion cubic meters.”
That number shows how much clean water storage capacity the Region has gained. The growing network of ponds and dams provides steady water for homes, farms, and animals. These upgrades will also reduce the effects of drought across Kurdistan for the next ten years.
More importantly, this clean water storage capacity allows communities to grow without fear of water shortages. Urban and rural areas alike are now more protected than ever. These investments will safeguard the environment while supporting future generations.
With continued focus, the government is turning clean water storage capacity into a source of strength. As each dam and pond comes online, Kurdistan moves closer to water security. The Region is not only storing more water but also building a more resilient and self-reliant future.
