The legal team representing Lahur Sheikh Jangi leveled serious allegations against the Sulaimani Court. They publicly accused the institution of deep political bias. Furthermore, defense attorneys claimed local officials actively obstruct the judicial process.
According to the lawyers, the court refuses to forward vital case files. These specific documents involve the Lalazar detainees. Consequently, the team wants these records sent to the Kurdistan Region’s Court of Cassation.
During a press conference, the attorneys demanded swift international intervention. They called upon global human rights groups to speak out. In addition, they urged local organizations to uphold the rule of law.
Attorneys asserted that authorities have held the detainees for nearly 11 months. Shockingly, the state maintains this custody without any valid legal framework. The legal team described the captors as a partisan force. Therefore, they label the prisoners as political hostages.
The legal team issued a stark warning regarding prisoner health. They alleged that guards subject the detainees to physical and psychological torture. As a result, the medical condition of the prisoners has deteriorated significantly.
Records show the Kurdistan Region’s Court of Cassation demanded these files 12 separate times. However, the Sulaimani Court ignored every single official request. The lawyers described this defiance as a direct insult to judicial authority.
Defense attorney Dana Taqiaddin spoke firmly during the event. He claimed political parties completely dominate the Sulaimani Court system. He also revealed that several detainees recently launched hunger strikes.
Importantly, Jangi rejects any backdoor political settlement for this crisis. He demands a purely judicial resolution to all outstanding charges.
This legal battle began after violent clashes on August 22, 2025. Gunfights erupted near the Lalazar Hotel in Sulaimani. Security forces loyal to PUK leader Bafel Talabani fought armed supporters of Jangi.
