Lebanon PM Nawaf Salam Meets Masrour Barzani in Davos

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani met Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam on the sidelines of the 2026 World Economic Forum in Davos. The leaders focused on regional developments, Syria’s stability, and the protection of Kurdish rights.

During the meeting, both leaders emphasized dialogue as a key tool to address tensions in the Middle East. “Political engagement and communication remain the only way to achieve lasting stability in the region,” Barzani said, stressing the importance of peaceful solutions.

Prime Minister Salam highlighted the significance of cooperation between Lebanon and the Kurdistan Region. “Kurdistan plays a critical role in promoting dialogue and stability across the region. Lebanon values this partnership and seeks closer ties,” he said.

The discussion included developments in Syria, particularly the ongoing conflict affecting Kurdish populations. Barzani underlined the need to protect Kurdish rights and ensure that all communities can participate in political processes. “Inclusion and respect for minority rights are essential for sustainable peace,” he added.

Both leaders also discussed security challenges, including the threat of extremist groups and cross-border instability. They stressed the importance of regional coordination, intelligence-sharing, and preventative measures to combat these threats effectively.

Economic and humanitarian issues formed another part of the talks. Barzani outlined Kurdistan’s investment opportunities, highlighting ongoing reforms and infrastructure development. Salam welcomed the idea of expanding economic and trade ties, noting that stronger economic cooperation can help stabilize the region and support communities affected by conflict.

The meeting concluded with both sides agreeing to maintain open channels of communication and continue diplomatic coordination beyond Davos. Barzani also invited Salam to visit Kurdistan in the coming months, a proposal that Salam accepted positively.

Analysts described the talks as a step forward in strengthening Kurdistan-Lebanon relations and promoting regional stability through diplomacy and collaboration.
