Masrour Barzani Offers Condolences to Cardinal Sako After Brother’s Passing

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani sent an official condolence message to Cardinal Louis Sako on Monday. The message expressed deep sympathy following the recent passing of the cardinal’s brother, Lazarus Sako.

Prime Minister Barzani conveyed sincere prayers for the family and offered comfort during this period of personal grief. Furthermore, regional leaders emphasized their enduring respect for Patriarch Sako and his prominent ecclesiastical leadership across the region.

This personal gesture highlights the longstanding diplomatic and social ties between Kurdish executive authorities and the Chaldean Catholic Church. In addition, Cardinal Sako remains a prominent advocate for religious freedom, civil rights, and interfaith dialogue in the region.

Patriarch Sako has met with Kurdish political leaders in Erbil to present prestigious honors on behalf of Pope Francis. Consequently, the Vatican recognized regional efforts to protect displaced Christian communities, preserve peaceful coexistence, and support minority groups.

The Kurdistan Region provided immediate shelter, administrative assistance, and security guarantees to thousands of Christian families fleeing violence. Therefore, ongoing communication between ecclesiastical leaders and regional authorities continues to reinforce social cohesion across the region’s diverse communities.

Political observers view these active diplomatic interactions as important pillars for maintaining institutional stability across the Middle East. Moreover, mutual respect between religious leaders and government officials helps safeguard minority rights while promoting inclusive governance.

Looking ahead, regional administrators remain committed to preserving religious diversity, interfaith harmony, and peaceful social integration. Meanwhile, church officials will continue collaborating with local institutions to support community welfare and educational development.
