Mazloum Abdi Reaffirms SDF Commitment to Defend Kurdish Areas

Syrian Democratic Forces commander Mazloum Abdi reaffirmed his forces’ readiness to defend their territory amid rising tensions in northern Syria. Moreover, he stressed commitment to political dialogue despite continued ceasefire violations.

Abdi spoke during a televised interview released on Sunday night. During the discussion, he addressed the recent agreement with Damascus. He also criticized repeated actions by Syrian Arab Army forces.

First, Abdi confirmed adherence to the agreement signed on the eighteenth of this month. However, he said implementation requires clear mechanisms. Therefore, discussions continue to clarify unresolved clauses.

Additionally, Abdi said the ceasefire extension came at Washington’s request. He explained that the extension allowed the transfer of ISIS detainees to Iraq. Meanwhile, attacks around Kobani continue despite the truce.

Furthermore, Abdi stressed that the agreement bars Syrian army forces from entering Syrian Democratic Forces -controlled regions. He emphasized that Kobani, Afrin, and Serekaniye remain core elements of the deal.

He also highlighted political demands within the agreement framework. Specifically, he mentioned requests for the Hasakah governorship and a deputy defense ministry role. These positions, he said, ensure balanced governance.

Abdi underlined that Kurdish areas must remain shielded from war. Consequently, he praised Kurdish political leaders for their support. He named Masoud Barzani and Nechirvan Barzani as key allies.

Moreover, Abdi rejected accusations of ethnic bias. He noted that Arab and minority fighters sacrificed their lives within SDF ranks. Therefore, he described the force as inclusive and national.

He criticized Syrian army conduct in Raqqa and Tabqa. According to Abdi, their behavior reflects chauvinistic attitudes. In contrast, he said the SDF rejects such practices.

Despite tensions, Abdi reiterated preference for political solutions. However, he warned that SDF forces stand ready to defend their land. He added that the spirit of Kobani’s earlier resistance has returned.

Finally, Abdi expressed hope for dialogue and mutual understanding. He said peace remains the goal, yet defense remains a necessity.
