Mobile Filmmaking Takes Center Stage in Sulaimani Festival Celebration

Huge crowds packed into Sulaimani during the weekend. Movie lovers quickly filled every seat at City Cinema. They gathered to celebrate the Kurdish Mobile Film Festival. The Vim Foundation successfully hosted this vibrant cultural event. Furthermore, the organization showcased fifteen impressive finalist films. Creative artists from all four Kurdish provinces produced these unique projects.

Organizers did not expect such a massive turnout. Consequently, the theater had to schedule a second screening. Many eager people waited outside even after the first movies ended. Sulaimani naturally attracted these visitors because people call it the capital of Kurdish culture.

The Vim Foundation operates as a nonprofit group. It regularly supports youth-led cultural and artistic programs. President Lava Hikmat actually created this festival. She wanted to promote the arts and support youth employment simultaneously. Since 2019, a dedicated staff of fifteen people has run the foundation. They also work alongside many passionate volunteers. The group offers master classes, sculpture workshops, and startup initiatives completely free of charge. Therefore, local youth view this hub as a perfect place for creative experimentation.

Contestants recorded short films using only their mobile phones. Then, they edited the five-to-ten-minute footage on computers. This specific method kept production costs incredibly low. As a result, financial barriers did not stop talented young filmmakers. The foundation originally received around two hundred submissions. Most entries came from the Kurdistan Region, including Duhok, Sulaimani, Erbil, and Halabja. Eventually, veteran artists served as jurors and selected the top fifteen films.

The festival presented awards in eleven different categories. Winners received prizes for best directing, screenplay, acting, and editing. Additionally, the top winner received the highly-coveted Vim Media Award. The foundation will fully fund that filmmaker’s next movie project. This prize directly helps emerging talents build sustainable careers. Producers and directors praised the festival highly. They hope these initiatives will soon build an independent Kurdish cinema industry.
