Nechirvan Barzani Meets EU Officials in Erbil to Strengthen Bilateral Ties

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with European Union officials on Sunday in Erbil to strengthen bilateral ties. European officials reaffirmed their ongoing commitment to supporting institutional stability and economic development throughout the region.

President Barzani hosted Klemens Semtner, the European Union Ambassador to Iraq, at the Presidential Palace. Stefan Wendt also joined the meeting as the newly appointed head of the European Union office.

President Barzani expressed his deep gratitude for the continuous assistance provided by European partners over recent years. He also congratulated Wendt on his new role and offered full administrative support to his team.

Ambassador Semtner reaffirmed that European institutions would maintain active partnerships across northern Iraq. The bloc also aims to expand its assistance in governance, security, and humanitarian projects through strategic cooperation.

Both delegations reviewed pressing domestic political issues as well as evolving security developments across the wider Middle East. Officials emphasized the importance of continued dialogue to address local economic challenges and advance administrative reforms.

The European diplomatic presence in Erbil demonstrates a long-term commitment to promoting diplomatic stability within Iraq’s federal system. International diplomatic offices therefore serve as important hubs for technical assistance, capacity building, and support for economic development.

Trade relations between European countries and businesses in the Kurdistan Region continue to expand through structured development programs. Meanwhile, security cooperation remains a key focus as international coalition partners work to support regional stability.

Looking ahead, regional authorities are expected to deepen diplomatic ties through additional high-level meetings in Erbil. Newly appointed European representatives will also oversee joint initiatives aimed at ensuring the effective implementation of projects across Iraq.
