Erbil, Kurdistan Region – Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani marked the 38th anniversary of the Anfal campaign in Garmian with a strong message on remembrance and justice. He described the campaign as a systematic attempt to eliminate an entire peaceful nation.
In his statement released on April 14, 2026, President Nechirvan Barzani stressed that the Anfal campaign was not a single crime. Instead, he said it represented a deliberate effort to erase the Kurdish people. He added that the effects of this tragedy still affect the nation today.
He stated that more than 182,000 innocent Kurds lost their lives during the campaign. Victims included children, women, and elderly civilians. Therefore, he described the campaign as one of the gravest crimes in modern history.
President Barzani honored the memory of the victims and expressed respect for their sacrifice. He also sent condolences and appreciation to the families of the victims. Moreover, he recognized their resilience and continued struggle for justice.
He emphasized that the Iraqi High Tribunal has already ruled on these crimes. The court confirmed the responsibility of the former regime. Therefore, President Barzani called on the federal government of Iraq to fulfill its obligations. He urged authorities to provide both material and moral compensation to the victims’ families.
Furthermore, he highlighted ongoing efforts to gain international recognition of the Anfal campaign as genocide. He stressed that these efforts will continue. He described recognition as both a moral and national responsibility.
President Barzani also addressed the issue of missing remains. He stated that authorities will continue searching for and returning the remains of victims. He emphasized that this duty remains essential for honoring the victims and supporting their families.
In addition, he called for increased support for survivors and families. He stressed the need to improve services and assistance programs. He also urged continued commitment to justice and accountability.
The president concluded by reaffirming the importance of remembrance. He stated that preserving the memory of the victims helps prevent future atrocities. He also emphasized unity and coexistence as key values for the future.
