President Nechirvan Barzani Meets New British Consul General in Kurdistan Region

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met new British Consul General Holly Vare to discuss stronger bilateral relations.

During the meeting, Barzani congratulated Vare on her appointment and wished her success in her new diplomatic role. He also welcomed her commitment to strengthening cooperation between the United Kingdom and the Kurdistan Region.

Barzani emphasized that Kurdistan Region institutions stand ready to support Vare’s diplomatic work. Furthermore, he highlighted opportunities to expand cooperation across political, economic, cultural, and institutional fields.

Vare expressed her appreciation for meeting President Barzani after taking up her new position. She also emphasized her commitment to developing broader cooperation between Britain and the Kurdistan Region.

The two sides discussed recent developments in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the wider Middle East. Moreover, they examined ways to build on existing relations and identify additional areas for cooperation.

The meeting comes as Britain maintains an important relationship with the Kurdistan Region. Over recent years, cooperation has included security, humanitarian assistance, education, trade, and diplomatic engagement.

Security cooperation remains particularly important because the Kurdistan Region continues facing challenges linked to regional instability. At the same time, economic and institutional cooperation provides opportunities for longer-term development.

Vare’s appointment could therefore provide another opportunity to strengthen communication between British and Kurdish institutions. Consequently, regular diplomatic engagement could support practical cooperation on shared political and economic priorities.

The discussions also reflect the wider importance of international partnerships for the Kurdistan Region. Meanwhile, stronger relations with Britain could support investment, education, tourism, and cultural exchanges.

For Britain, continued engagement with the Kurdistan Region provides opportunities to support stability within Iraq. Additionally, stronger institutional ties could help address regional challenges through sustained diplomatic coordination.

Both sides are expected to continue discussions across several sectors. These efforts could include economic partnerships, security cooperation, education programs, cultural initiatives, and institutional exchanges.

The meeting also demonstrated a shared interest in maintaining dialogue during continued regional uncertainty. Therefore, closer coordination could help both sides respond more effectively to emerging political and economic developments.

Barzani and Vare’s meeting highlighted the importance of the longstanding relationship between Britain and Kurdistan. It also established a foundation for further cooperation under Vare’s new diplomatic assignment.
