Diplomatic relations between Erbil and Rome reached a historic milestone this week during a special ceremony. Italy’s top diplomat presented a prestigious award to Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Wednesday. Specifically, the official delivered the Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of the Star of Italy.
This special medal represents Rome’s highest commendation for international figures. Typically, the European nation gives this honor to individuals who advance global relations or protect human rights. Additionally, the award recognizes leaders who provide exceptional service to Italian interests abroad.
During the event, Italian Ambassador Niccolo Fontana praised Barzani’s pragmatic leadership. He emphasized the President’s constant efforts to foster peace and meaningful dialogue through institutional engagement. Furthermore, Fontana noted that Barzani always offers unconditional support to the local Italian presence.
Italian Consul General Tommaso Sansone also explained the motivation behind this major diplomatic decision. He highlighted the President’s remarkably high political profile. Moreover, Sansone stated that the prize reflects a close partnership with the Italian consulate.
Italian President Sergio Mattarella officially approves each candidate for this noble order. First, the foreign minister nominates a prominent figure. Next, a five-member committee evaluates the selection before the final presidential decree.
Accepting the medal, Barzani expressed deep gratitude to the Italian government and its people. He described the insignia as a tribute to longstanding historic ties. He also thanked every person who worked sincerely to strengthen this bilateral connection over the years.
Rome opened a consulate in Erbil in late 2015 to expand its presence. Barzani attended that opening ceremony during his previous tenure as prime minister. Later, the foreign ministry upgraded the diplomatic mission to a consulate general in June 2024.
Most importantly, Italy provided vital military assistance during the armed conflict against ISIS militants. The European country became a leading contributor to the global coalition against terrorism. For example, Italian instructors delivered crucial tactical training to the Peshmerga forces.
Barzani noted that this defensive support significantly protected regional stability and defeated extremist groups. Currently, Rome conducts its security operations under the specific national codename Operation Prima Parthica. Furthermore, Italy helped found the regional training coordination center for local security personnel.
Italian advisors actively assist the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs with modern institutional reforms. They aim to unify regional military units under a single command structure. Ultimately, Barzani concluded his remarks with immense pride regarding this flourishing international friendship.
