Qubad Talabani said the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) is prepared for either the formation of the Kurdistan Region’s tenth cabinet or the possibility of holding new parliamentary elections.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Talabani expressed concern over the continued delay in forming the next government. However, he stressed that the PUK has supported the quick formation of a cabinet since the beginning of negotiations.
Talabani stated that the Kurdistan Region needs a government that serves all citizens equally. He emphasized that the next cabinet should provide services to every province, district, independent administration, and subdistrict without discrimination.
He also underlined the importance of genuine political partnership in the new government. “Our condition for forming the cabinet is a real partnership,” Talabani said.
Furthermore, the deputy prime minister reaffirmed the PUK’s readiness for dialogue with political parties. He explained that the party has consistently called for constructive cooperation and continued negotiations.
“We are ready to meet with all sides,” Talabani said. “We have always followed a clear path and called for true partnership.”
In addition, Talabani addressed the political atmosphere in Sulaimani and the condition of press freedom in the province. He stated that journalists enjoy freedom in Sulaimani, although some violations may occur occasionally.
According to Talabani, civil society organizations, intellectuals, and media institutions in Sulaimani remain active and influential. He also described the relationship between authorities and citizens in the province as healthy and balanced.
The comments come more than one year and six months after the Kurdistan Region parliamentary elections. Despite ongoing negotiations among political parties, leaders have not yet formed the tenth cabinet.
Talabani concluded by saying the PUK remains ready for both possible outcomes. “Whether elections are repeated or the tenth cabinet is formed, we are prepared for both,” he said.
