The Rwanga Foundation has completed a three-year initiative that helped 2,171 returnees rebuild their lives across the Kurdistan Region and Iraq. The program supported families returning from abroad through training, business development, and financial assistance. Officials say the initiative strengthened economic opportunities while encouraging sustainable reintegration into local communities.
The closing ceremony took place in Erbil on Monday in coordination with the Joint Crisis Coordination Center. Representatives reviewed the project’s achievements and discussed its contribution to long-term community development. They also highlighted continued cooperation between humanitarian organizations and public institutions.
The initiative ran for 36 months, beginning on August 1, 2023, and concluding on July 31, 2026. During that period, it reached beneficiaries across seven governorates in Iraq. The program focused on creating employment opportunities and helping returnees establish stable sources of income.
Many Iraqi and Kurdish families have returned home after spending years abroad. However, many continue facing challenges related to employment, business opportunities, and economic reintegration. Therefore, development programs remain important for helping returnees rebuild independent and productive lives.
The Rwanga Foundation designed the project around practical skills and long-term sustainability. Participants first received business planning training before experts evaluated their professional abilities. Afterwards, they developed business ideas and later received financial support to launch their own projects.
Executive Director Hassan Shekh Aladin explained that the structured approach increased participants’ chances of long-term success. He said each stage prepared beneficiaries for sustainable employment and entrepreneurship. Consequently, many participants successfully established small businesses after completing the program.
Several beneficiaries shared positive experiences during the closing ceremony. Sarwar Ahmad returned to Ranya after spending several years in Finland. He said the initiative restored confidence and provided the support needed to begin a new chapter with his family.
Another participant, Hazha Azad, explained that the foundation helped her expand her business after returning home. She credited the program with providing valuable guidance and practical assistance. Furthermore, she said the support strengthened her long-term business prospects.
The initiative received funding from Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs through its Department of Migration, Stabilization and Fragility. Officials believe international partnerships remain essential for supporting vulnerable communities and encouraging sustainable economic recovery.
The successful completion of the program demonstrates growing efforts to support returning migrants through practical economic solutions. Officials expect similar initiatives to strengthen local economies, encourage entrepreneurship, and improve reintegration opportunities across the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
