Rwanga Foundation Launches Fifth Off-Grid Solar Project in Kurdistan Region

A major green energy initiative is transforming daily life for rural residents in the northern Kurdistan Region. The Rwanga Foundation recently launched its fifth off-grid solar-powered project in the village of Ziyarat. Consequently, local families now enjoy continuous electricity for the first time in years.

Before this project, the community faced severe daily power shortages. Residents relied heavily on expensive, noisy private generators. These machines drained financial resources and polluted the local environment. Furthermore, the unstable grid forced families to choose between having power during the day or the night.

The new solar infrastructure completely eliminates these energy struggles. The system delivers a total supply capacity of 1,500 amperes. Specifically, it provides approximately 100 households with 15 amperes of free electricity each. This change guarantees round-the-clock power services for the entire community.

Local citizens expressed immense relief and gratitude during the project unveiling. Badriya Fattah explained that the community previously felt trapped in darkness. Meanwhile, Rasul Abdullah noted that the constant power brought true peace to his household. Another local, Assad Hassan, praised the leadership of Rwanga Foundation Chairman Idris Nechirvan Barzani. Hassan highlighted how much this development means to the villagers. He also expressed hope for future expansions.

The Rwanga Foundation began this specific initiative in mid-2025. Since then, the non-profit has successfully powered five villages. These locations include Gre Bie, Kulak, Qamish, Sheikh Wasan, and now Ziyarat. Executive Director Hassan Sheikh Aladin emphasized that these projects fulfill a long-term vision. The organization targets underserved communities to create a lasting, sustainable impact. Ultimately, the foundation plans to introduce solar power to many more villages across the area.
