Shanidar Cave Offers New Clues to Ancient Human Life

Archaeologists continue to uncover surprising insights at Shanidar Cave in northern Iraq. This historic site, located in the Zagros Mountains, has revealed vital information about Neanderthals and early humans.

In recent years, researchers returned to Shanidar Cave to re-examine the remains discovered decades ago. These new excavations have uncovered another Neanderthal skeleton. This finding adds to earlier discoveries made during the 1950s and 60s, when ten Neanderthal individuals were unearthed. One of them, known as “Shanidar 4,” was found with ancient pollen, suggesting that Neanderthals might have held burial rituals.
