Vatican Praises Kurdistan Region’s Support for Christians and Minorities

The Vatican on Wednesday praised the Kurdistan Region’s support for Christians and other minority communities during a meeting between Masrour Barzani and Miroslaw Wachowski.

During the meeting, Wachowski conveyed the “appreciation and gratitude” of Pope Leo XIV to Prime Minister Barzani for promoting peaceful coexistence in the Kurdistan Region.

According to the Vatican envoy, the Kurdistan Region holds “a special place” in the Pope’s heart because of its support for religious diversity and coexistence among different communities.

Prime Minister Barzani reaffirmed the Kurdistan Regional Government’s support for the success of Wachowski’s diplomatic mission in Iraq. He also stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation and dialogue among religious and ethnic communities.

The meeting additionally focused on the KRG’s reform agenda and ongoing political developments in Iraq.

Both sides discussed efforts to form Iraq’s next federal government as political negotiations continue in Baghdad.

The Kurdistan Region has frequently received international recognition for hosting and supporting Christians, Yazidis, and other minority groups displaced by conflict and terrorism in Iraq.

Officials continue to describe coexistence and religious tolerance as key principles of the Kurdistan Region’s political and social model.

The meeting reflected continued cooperation between the Vatican and the Kurdistan Region on issues related to coexistence, stability, and minority rights.
