Michael Flynn Hails Kurdistan Region as a Trusted U.S. Partner, Urges Unity and Investment in People

In a wide-ranging interview, former U.S. National Security Advisor Michael Flynn praised the longstanding relationship between the United States and the Kurdistan Region, describing it as one built on “shared sacrifice” and mutual respect. His remarks reaffirm Washington’s historical ties with the Kurdish people and emphasized the critical role of the Peshmerga forces in regional stability.

Flynn characterized the connection between the U.S. and the Kurdistan Region as “exceptional and long-lasting,” particularly noting the enduring military partnership. “The relationship between the United States and the Peshmerga, which is a key component of the Kurdistan Region, has stood the test of time,” he said, reflecting on decades of cooperation during regional conflicts and the fight against ISIS.

He also recognized the contributions of the Kurdish people to shared American security objectives. “The people of the Kurdistan Region have made significant sacrifices—for their homeland and for the United States. Our relationship spans well over two decades and continues to be one of trust and shared interests.”

In addition to highlighting the Region’s international partnerships, Flynn turned his attention to domestic governance, encouraging Kurdish leaders to prioritize unity and strategic vision. “The leadership—the president, the prime minister, and their team—must understand the importance of internal unity,” he urged.

He emphasized that unity and transparency are vital to navigating current challenges and ensuring long-term progress. Flynn called on Kurdish officials to embrace the potential of their people, describing them as the Region’s greatest asset. “Leverage the strength of your people,” he advised. “Do that, and you can build a strong future—one that I hope will lead to the realization of a nation-state of Kurdistan.”

Flynn’s comments reflect both a recognition of the Kurdistan Region’s growing diplomatic and military role and a call for renewed cohesion at home. As the Region continues to engage internationally and manage internal reforms, voices like Flynn’s signal continued support from longstanding U.S. partners and underscore the strategic value of Erbil-Washington relations.
