Kurdistan Parties Plan Key Talks to Resolve Disputes with Baghdad

Leaders from the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) will hold a high-level meeting in Erbil. The meeting will take place in the Pirmam area and will bring together senior officials from both parties. Masoud Barzani, leader of the KDP, and Bafel Talabani, President of the PUK, will attend the talks alongside other top representatives.

The purpose of this meeting is to coordinate a united Kurdish position in negotiations with the federal government in Baghdad. Both parties aim to strengthen cooperation and push forward efforts to resolve the ongoing salary crisis that has affected public employees in the Kurdistan Region.

A trusted source close to the matter confirmed that the discussion will focus on financial issues and federal relations. These talks come at a critical time when internal unity in Kurdistan is essential for gaining progress in Baghdad.

This new effort follows a recent statement from Barzani’s office, which called for calm and urged a return to meaningful dialogue. The statement noted that the KDP remains committed to peaceful resolution and views mutual understanding as the only path forward. “We have decided to give the federal government in Baghdad a final chance to resolve this crisis,” the statement emphasized, showing the party’s continued willingness to cooperate through constitutional and legal frameworks.

Kurdish parties have faced internal disagreements over strategy in dealing with Baghdad, especially concerning budget issues and control over oil revenues. These divisions have made negotiations more difficult and have weakened the Kurdish bloc’s leverage at the federal level.

However, the current salary crisis has added urgency to the situation. Citizens across the Kurdistan Region are demanding faster solutions and more unity among Kurdish leaders. This pressure from the public may push both parties to bridge gaps and speak with one voice in future talks with the central government.

If the meeting produces a clear and united policy, it could mark a new phase in Kurdish-federal relations. Strong cooperation between the KDP and PUK would increase the chances of securing financial entitlements and other constitutional rights for the Kurdistan Region.
