Soran Begins 5-Year Tourism Plan to Lead Kurdistan Travel

Soran Independent Administration has launched a bold five-year tourism plan aimed at transforming the area into the tourism capital of the Kurdistan Region. The plan began with the renovation of Gali Ali Beg and is directly supervised by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani.

The project’s first phase started on July 24 with upgrades to Gali Ali Beg, a well-known destination considered the heart of Soran’s tourism identity. For several days, the site has been closed for renovation to meet international standards.

Dr. Faisal Sadiq, Director General of Tourism in Soran, said the goal is to attract global visitors and boost tourism numbers. He noted the project started two years ago with early planning by the KRG and the Prime Minister’s office. A team of international experts helped prepare the master plan to match global tourism benchmarks.

After Gali Ali Beg, the plan will extend to Bekhal, Balakayati, Sidekan, and Rawanduz. These areas will also undergo upgrades to improve visitor experience.

Dr. Sadiq highlighted Prime Minister Masrour Barzani’s close involvement. He explained that the Prime Minister’s direct supervision has accelerated progress and made the work more efficient.

“The aim is to lift Soran beyond its local scope,” Dr. Sadiq said. “We want to make it a destination for international travelers. That’s the Prime Minister’s vision.”

Soran has the natural and cultural features needed to succeed, according to Dr. Sadiq. He believes the region can achieve global status in tourism with continued support and careful planning.

Over the last three years, Soran has welcomed nearly one million tourists each year. Now, local officials hope to double those numbers and make Soran the heart of tourism in the region.
