Farmers across Kurdistan are seeing strong results from a private sector wheat-purchasing program now in its fifth year. This ongoing partnership links farmers directly to flour producers, keeping wheat production within the local economy and boosting the region’s agricultural strength.
The wheat-buying initiative runs from July 15 to August 15, offering farmers a clear, well-organized window to deliver their harvests. Companies like Das Food Industries are taking in hundreds of tons of wheat. Sarmad Rasheed, the company’s General Director, confirmed that their focus is on high-quality grain suitable for flour found in local markets.
Rasheed emphasized the importance of quality control and a strict schedule. “The timeframe is good,” he said. “We are ready to receive large amounts of wheat as planned.”
Farmers welcomed the support from the private sector. Aziz Abdulkarim, one farmer involved, explained, “The Regional Government took 10 tons, but I delivered 30 tons to this company.” Another farmer, Star Jabbar, shared that he brought 18 tons. He noted price shifts, with current rates ranging between 430,000 and 480,000 dinars per ton, depending on the wheat’s grade.
This program helps farmers sell their full harvests while supporting food security and connecting agriculture to consumer demand. It also benefits farmers beyond Erbil, including those in Qaraj and Kendinawa, uniting the region’s farming communities.
By linking farmers with local markets and companies, this partnership protects livelihoods, prevents waste, and strengthens the backbone of Kurdistan’s economy.
