Barzani, UK Admiral Discuss ISIS and Drone Threats in Erbil

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with British Vice Admiral Edward Ahlgren in Erbil to address growing security concerns across the Region. The discussions focused on recent drone strikes and the continued threat from ISIS militants.

The British delegation included the UK’s Senior Defence Adviser for the Middle East and North Africa, along with the British Consul General. The Chief of Staff of the Peshmerga Forces also took part in the talks, which centered on ongoing regional instability.

President Barzani stressed that ISIS remains a serious danger in both Syria and across the Kurdistan Region. He warned that the group still poses a major risk to peace and security. At the same time, Barzani condemned drone attacks that recently hit key oil infrastructure. He said those assaults not only disrupt daily life but also threaten economic growth in cities like Erbil, Sulaimani, and Duhok.

He also pointed out that such attacks undermine trust and push away international investors. That could have long-term consequences for energy development and jobs in the Region.

Vice Admiral Ahlgren responded by expressing the UK’s full support for the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region. He confirmed Britain’s commitment to working closely with local forces and authorities to enhance safety and maintain peace.

Both sides also discussed broader regional issues. These included the relationship between Erbil and Baghdad, Syria’s conflict, Kurdish and minority rights, and the peace process in Turkey.
