Kurdistan Region President Urges Yazidi Compensation and Sinjar Reform

On the 11th anniversary of the Yazidi genocide, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani issued a strong call to Baghdad. He demanded compensation for Yazidi victims, removal of militias from Sinjar, and full implementation of the Sinjar Agreement.

In his statement, Barzani described the Yazidis’ suffering as heartbreaking. He said it’s unacceptable that, after 11 years, half of the Yazidi population still lives in camps. He stressed that the lack of basic services, security, and justice continues to deepen their pain.

Barzani firmly stated that Baghdad must take full responsibility. He urged the federal government to stop allowing militias to operate in Sinjar. He also called for the region to become a province, restoring trust and normal life.

“The Iraqi government must stop turning Sinjar into a battleground for militias and agendas,” he said. “We need reconstruction, security, and justice now.”

The president reaffirmed the Kurdistan Regional Government’s continued support. “We will protect Yazidis until every last abductee is found,” he pledged. His office will continue rescue efforts until all missing persons are located.

He also urged the global community to provide more support. Barzani thanked countries that recognized the Yazidi massacre as genocide. He promised ongoing international outreach for broader recognition.

Barzani also honored the Kurdish Peshmerga. He praised their sacrifices during the liberation of Sinjar and paid tribute to those who lost their lives under the leadership of President Masoud Barzani.

The president’s message marks a critical push for accountability, justice, and long-overdue reform in Sinjar. He made clear that healing will only come through action—both from Baghdad and the global community.
