The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) parliamentary bloc has urged Baghdad to deliver justice and full compensation to the families of Barzani victims of the Anfal campaign. This call comes on the 42nd anniversary of the massacre that claimed over 8,000 lives.
In a solemn statement released, the KDP bloc described the massacre as one of the most brutal crimes against humanity. The group called it a deliberate and systematic attempt by the former Ba’athist regime to erase Kurdish identity.
The statement commemorated the victims with deep respect. “We honor the memory of the martyrs who were taken for no reason other than their identity,” it read. “Their sacrifice lives on in every Kurd who still seeks truth, dignity, and justice.”
The KDP placed responsibility squarely on the federal government. The bloc said that Baghdad has both a moral and constitutional obligation to compensate the victims’ families. This includes financial reparations and psychological support.
The party also warned of the growing presence of chauvinist ideas in some parts of the country. They said this ideology threatens Iraq’s unity and stability. “Such mindsets must be confronted,” the KDP declared. “They harm national cohesion and challenge the progress of the Kurdistan Region.”
The bloc emphasized that justice for Anfal victims remains a national responsibility. They called for immediate and meaningful steps toward accountability. The message also noted that honoring the past must include action, not just remembrance.
As they remembered the massacre, the KDP once again stressed the need to defend Kurdistan’s achievements. They warned against political voices that seek to undermine peace and development in the region.
The statement ended with a tribute to all Kurdish martyrs: “Glory and mercy to the martyrs of the Barzani Anfal campaign. May their legacy guide the path toward justice, freedom, and dignity.”
