Barzani Honors Simele Victims, Reaffirms Kurdistan as Safe Haven

President Nechirvan Barzani has marked the 92nd anniversary of the Simele Massacre with a solemn tribute to its victims. He emphasized that Kurdistan will always remain a place of safety and coexistence.

In a statement shared on Thursday, Barzani recalled the brutal campaign carried out by the monarchical regime in 1933. The massacre targeted Assyrian civilians in Simele and more than sixty nearby villages in Duhok and Mosul areas.

Led by General Bakr Sidqi, the Iraqi army launched a deadly operation that resulted in the killing of hundreds. While some historical accounts mention several hundred victims, others report over 3,000 deaths during the massacre.

Barzani described the attack as a genocidal act and highlighted its devastating impact on Assyrian communities. He stressed the importance of remembering these tragic events to prevent future atrocities.

“On this day of remembrance, we renew our commitment to preserving and advancing a culture of diversity, coexistence, and mutual acceptance,” said Barzani.

He added that the Kurdistan Region will always stand as a safe haven for all ethnic and religious communities. This message comes as a reassurance to those who call Kurdistan home, especially vulnerable groups seeking peace and dignity.

The president’s message reflects ongoing efforts to promote unity and reject violence in all forms. As the region continues to face challenges, this commemoration serves as a reminder of Kurdistan’s resilience and moral responsibility.
