Shaswar Abdulwahid Detained in Sulaymaniyah Under Threat Charges

Sulaymaniyah’s legal circles confirmed that authorities arrested Shaswar Abdulwahid, leader of the New Generation Movement, under a court order tied to Article 431 of the Penal Code. This article deals directly with criminal threats.

Legal advisor Chya Zangana explained that Article 431 applies when a person threatens to harm another person or their property. It also covers threats involving dishonourable accusations combined with demands or instructions to act or refrain from acting. Offenders can face imprisonment for up to seven years or short-term detention depending on the severity.

Moreover, the law applies even when threats are made through anonymous letters or linked to secret groups. According to Zangana, severe imprisonment ranges from three months to five years, while lighter sentences range from four hours to three months. The competent court always decides the final punishment.

Zangana revealed that the court had already issued an in absentia ruling against Abdulwahid, sentencing him to six months in prison for failing to appear. In addition, authorities may take further measures if other legal cases are still active. Aggrieved parties also have the right to launch new lawsuits against him, which could extend the legal proceedings.

The situation has sparked debates in Sulaymaniyah’s political and legal communities, as many closely monitor developments and await further court actions.
