Erbil Hosts Meeting Between Barzani and U.S. Assyrian Delegation

Prime Minister Masrour Barzani met a U.S. Assyrian delegation in Erbil and renewed his pledge to protect minority rights. The delegation, led by Sam Darmo of the Foundation of Assyrians for Justice, praised the Kurdistan Region for its unique culture of coexistence.

During the talks, Prime Minister Barzani emphasized that his government will always safeguard diversity and religious freedom. He also highlighted that the region continues to provide a safe home for different communities. The delegation welcomed these assurances and expressed appreciation for the region’s commitment to inclusion.

The meeting also underlined the strong bond between Assyrians in the diaspora and their ancestral homeland. Although many Assyrians have resettled abroad, especially in the United States, they remain deeply connected to their cultural roots. The Foundation of Assyrians for Justice continues to advocate for their rights and heritage.

The Kurdistan Region has long offered safety to minorities escaping conflict in neighboring areas. During the rise of ISIS, displaced groups such as Christians, Yezidis, and others found protection there. The government coordinated humanitarian efforts to shelter and support these communities.

Furthermore, the delegation noted that the Kurdistan Region’s stability sets it apart from much of the Middle East. They stressed that this spirit of coexistence strengthens both local communities and international relations. Prime Minister Barzani agreed, pointing out that peace depends on mutual respect and cooperation.

In addition, Erbil recently hosted the first National Prayer Breakfast, a major event celebrating unity and faith. President Masoud Barzani, alongside regional and international leaders, attended the ceremony. This initiative reflected the region’s ongoing effort to encourage dialogue among diverse groups.

Altogether, the meeting and the recent celebration highlight the Kurdistan Region’s consistent role as a place of tolerance. Leaders and communities continue to work together to build a secure and inclusive future.
