Erbil Hosts Barzani Meeting with U.S. Assyrian Delegation

President Masoud Barzani welcomed an Assyrian delegation from the United States in Erbil’s Pirmam district. The group, led by Sam Darmo from the Foundation of Assyrians for Justice, discussed the historic bond between Assyrians and Kurds.

During the meeting, President Barzani underlined that Assyrians, alongside other ethnic and religious communities, form part of the indigenous fabric of the Kurdistan Region. He stressed that these communities have always shared their destinies and will continue to live together freely in the future.

He also highlighted his government’s dedication to supporting displaced families who sought safety in the region. He emphasized that regional institutions continue to provide security, stability, and opportunities for a better future.

The delegation expressed deep appreciation for the hospitality and unity they witnessed. They explained that returning to their ancestral homeland allowed them to reconnect with relatives and heritage. They also reaffirmed their role as an integral part of the region’s people.

Earlier, the same delegation met Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, where they praised the region as a haven for peaceful coexistence. They noted that Erbil stands out in the Middle East for its culture of freedom and diversity.

The Kurdistan Region has consistently sheltered minorities fleeing violence from neighboring areas. In 2014, during the rise of ISIS, communities such as Yezidis, Christians, and others found safety there. Humanitarian efforts ensured shelter, food, and protection for hundreds of thousands.

Assyrians, one of the oldest Christian groups in Mesopotamia, continue to maintain close ties with their homeland despite widespread displacement. Many now live in the United States, yet organizations like the Foundation of Assyrians for Justice continue to advocate for their rights and cultural preservation.

Meanwhile, the Kurdistan Region recently hosted its first National Prayer Breakfast in Erbil. President Barzani joined international and regional leaders to promote peace under the theme “Towards Unity in Faith.” The event marked an important milestone in fostering dialogue among diverse communities.
