Prime Minister Masrour Barzani chaired a high-level meeting in Erbil to review progress on Peshmerga reform and unification. The discussions focused on accelerating reforms within the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs and building a professional, unified force.
The Prime Minister welcomed the steps already taken in the reform process. He stressed that the government must complete all measures to establish a modern and effective defense system. He highlighted the importance of unity and transparency in every stage of the process.
One key decision established a single accounting system for all Peshmerga forces. The Ministry of Finance and Economy will now supervise financial management to ensure clarity and efficiency. This move reflects the government’s goal of strengthening trust and accountability across the force.
The meeting also approved new plans to reorganize Peshmerga units. Leaders agreed to redeploy forces in line with reform priorities. Prime Minister Barzani instructed institutions to improve pension processing for veterans, reinforcing his commitment to their rights and welfare.
Officials again urged Baghdad to recognize the Peshmerga’s constitutional role as part of the national defense system. They also called for equal salaries and benefits with the federal army.
Osman Risha, spokesperson for the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs, explained that reforms align with agreements involving Washington. He noted that by 2026 all forces should be fully integrated. He added that the MyAccount salary system will launch within two months to enhance transparency.
The reforms also include structural and operational changes. US military assistance and training programs will continue, helping the force advance toward international standards. The unification of the 70th and 80th units has already strengthened cooperation across the ministry.
A unified command system will reduce delays, improve deployment, and boost readiness against threats, including ISIS remnants. The initiative stands as a milestone in building a stronger defense structure and demonstrates continued partnership with international allies.
