PM Barzani Masrour Barzani Meets Japanese Ambassador

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani welcomed Akira Endo, Japan’s Ambassador to Iraq, in Erbil. The meeting focused on expanding Japan–Kurdistan cooperation, reviewing ongoing development projects, and strengthening bilateral ties.

The discussion highlighted Japan’s role in supporting the Kurdistan Region through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Ambassador Endo emphasized Japan’s contributions to infrastructure, capacity-building, humanitarian aid, and governance reforms. Prime Minister Barzani expressed gratitude for Japan’s continued support, noting the high quality and impact of JICA’s initiatives across the region.

Both sides underlined the importance of long-term development partnerships. Barzani emphasized the Kurdistan Region’s interest in leveraging Japan’s expertise in industrial growth, education, and economic development. Ambassador Endo highlighted that Japan remains committed to supporting Kurdistan’s stability, sustainable development, and social welfare programs.

The meeting also touched on Iraq’s general political situation and preparations for the Iraq 2025 parliamentary elections. The leaders stressed that strong international cooperation, especially with reliable partners like Japan, is essential for regional stability and governance improvements.

In recent years, Japan has supported various projects in water management, electricity, vocational training, and institutional reforms. The KRG considers Japan a key development partner, providing both technical knowledge and financial assistance to ensure long-term growth.

Prime Minister Barzani reiterated that Japan–Kurdistan cooperation is vital for advancing economic growth and addressing social and infrastructure needs. The meeting reinforced the shared commitment to deepening ties, fostering investment, and creating opportunities for knowledge transfer between Japan and the Kurdistan Region.
